When is it time to call a Roofer?
Discovering a leak in your roof is one of the most dreaded experiences a homeowner can face, but it doesn’t have to be. Knowing the warning signs and ways to mitigate damage will help you lower costs and headaches moving forward.
Signs of a Damaged or Failing Roof:
Most of us don’t think about our roof until we discover a leak. A roof is one of those things we tend to forget about until it reminds us that it is still there. In most cases that reminder is a leak caused by damage or aging shingles or other materials. Keeping track of your roof’s condition is a good idea, and here are a few tips to help you understand how to do so.
- Check your yard for shingle debris following any storm.
- Keep an eye out for roofing debris in your gutters each time you clean them.
- Visually inspect your roof from the ground and note any odd patterns.
- Inspect the metal around chimneys and other penetrations through your roof.
- Look for missing shingles or shingle debris in the valleys of your roof.
- Check for raised shingles, those that look out of place, or seem to be a different color.
- Look for exposed fasteners or nails that are coming back through shingles.
- Limbs that are touching your roof, or getting close should be removed immediately.
- Missing ridge vent or other ventilation accessories
- Check interior windows and door casings for moisture during a rainstorm.
- Carefully check attic spaces for moisture.
- Inspect for wet or discolored ceiling tiles or drywall.
